This week Richard Fuller CBE MP came to talk to Warwick Rotarians about his life in Politics. The audience also included students from Myton and other young people interested in public affairs and led to a lively discussion.
Richard was brought up in Bedford and said that he enjoys representing the people of North Bedfordshire. Originally a Young Conservative, Richard left politics in 1986 and went into Business working in Australia, the Philippines, Korea and the US. Returning to the UK in 2019 he was elected as MP for North Bedfordshire. Losing office in the last election he is currently Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury.
Richard talked about the privilege of representing the place you were brought up and fighting for causes you believed in. He has been able to observe law making from the heart of government and was for a short period a minister in the treasury, serving under three Chancellors and three Prime Ministers!
Richard urged the students to make the most of the opportunities they have been given and try to follow a career they enjoy. They must accept change, be agile and adapt to new technologies and not expect others to provide them with a living. He has a global perspective and is working to encourage business to return to the UK and develop our financial independence.
Students asked why politics seemed so adversarial to which Richard responded that there was co-operation behind the scenes to try and ensure that new laws were fit for purpose. Rotarians were concerned about politicians finding a way to fund the care needs of an aging society and helping young people into employment.
President Jon Wassall closed the evening thanking Richard for finding the time to come and speak to members and sent our good wishes to his father, our oldest member who was unable to attend.
