Feb26 - Pancakes go flying for traditional dash

Warwick Marketplace was bathed in sunshine last Tuesday lunchtime, for the annual pancake races organised by the Rotary Club of Warwick. The square filled with delighted screams as teams competed for the Pancake Trophy.

Warwick Mayor Cllr Jackie D’Arcy joined Rotary President Elect Rachel Hinton to start off the races. A team of Town Councillors and friends stood ready to compete against all comers but unfortunately only a scratch team of Rotarians came forward and were roundly beaten! The Mayor presented them with their prizes of Bucks Fizz and then greeted the children coming into the square.

Children from 5 local Primary schools were cheered on by a crowd of excited classmates, parents and passers-by as Rotarian Alan Bailey set off the first teams. Children raced up and down the square flipping pancakes as they went, watched by first aiders from (WARKSAR) Warwickshire Search & Rescue who commented what a joyous experience it was with fortunately no spills!

Youngsters from Year 2 at Newburgh Primary were on good form and after winning 2 of the heats finally won the match. In the Year 6 races Newburgh Primary also prevailed and won the trophy this year – perhaps they’d all been practising?.

Rotarian Rachel Hinton and Warwick Mayor Councillor Jackie D’Arcy presented prizes to the winning teams and the winners all received Easter Eggs donated by Tesco.

Rachel Hinton said “we were delighted that the day turned out so well, it was really buzzing with so much energy from all the children. This is one of the events we arrange for the local community, keeping a tradition alive!”
